He has received numerous awards for his work, including an award from the National Institute and Academy of Arts and Letters in 1971, and most recently, the T. S. Eliot Award. MARK DOTY is the author of many books of poetry. For complete notes, see interview on page forty-six. CLYDE EdGERTON is the author of eight novels, including In Memory ofJunior, Redeye, and Walking Across Egypt. His first nonfiction book, about flying airplanes, is due from Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill in September 2005. He teaches in the MFA program at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. ALICIA Erian's first book of short stories, The Brutal Language ofLove, is currently out in paperback from Random House. Her first novel, Towelhead, will be published by Simon & Schuster in April 2005. The novel has been optioned by Alan Ball, Academy Award-winning screenwriter of American Beauty and creator of the HBO series Six Feet Under, who hopes to make it his directorial debut. Erian's fiction has appeared in magazines and journals such as Playboy, Zoetrope, Open City, The Sun, Nerve, and the Iowa Review. ROBERT FINCH has written several works of nonfiction about Cape Cod, including Outlands and The Primal Place. He is co-editor of The Norton Book ofNature Writing. JENNIFER HANCOCK'S poems have appeared in several journals, including The Antioch Review, Puerto del Sol, Quarterly West, and The Spoon River Poetry Review. She currently teaches creative writing and baseball literature at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois. CHARLES HaveRTY's stories have recently appeared in the Gettysburg Review, AGNI, and Colorado Review. He lives in Lexington, Massachusetts, with his wife, children, and dog. 156 Notes on Contributors JOHN HAY is the author of seventeen books, including The Run and, most recently, Mind the Gap. Among his many honors, he has won the John Burroughs Award for Nature Writing and been named the Massachusetts conservationist of the year. CYNTHIA HUNTINGTON, named New Hampshire's poet laureate in 2004, has several books published, most recently The Radiant and The Salt House: A Summer on the Dunes of Cape Cod. She has received fellowships from the MacDowell Colony, the Fine Arts Work Center, the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Huntington is also Director of the Creative Writing Program at Dartmouth College and teaches at Vermont College. TlMOTHY LlU is the author of five books of poems, most recently Of Thee I Sing. A distinguished visiting writer in 2001 at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Liu has since returned to Hoboken, New Jersey, where he belongs. SARAH ManGUSO is the author of The Captain Lands in Paradise and Siste Viator, forthcoming from Four Way Books. She teaches in the New School's MFA program and lives in Brooklyn. PETER MATTHIESSEN has authored more than twenty works of fiction and nonfiction including At Play in the Fields ofthe Lord, Far Tortuga, and The Snow Leopard, which won the National Book Award in 1978. BRAD LAND studied creative writing at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where he received his MFA, and Western Michigan University, where he served as nonfiction editor of Third Coast. He has been a fellow at the MacDowell Colony and is the author of Goat: A Memoir. PHILIP LeVINE is the author of sixteen books of poetry, most recently Breath. His other collections include The Simple Truth, which won the Pulitzer Prize and What Work Is, which won the National Book Award. For two years he has served as chair of the Literature Panel of the National Endowment for the Arts, and he was elected a Chancellor of 157 EcoTONE: reimagining place the Academy of American Poets in 2000. He divides his time between Fresno, California and Brooklyn, New York. PAUL LiSICKY is the author of the books Lawnboy and Famous Builder.
