In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

  • Appreciations
  • Zimitri Erasmus (bio) and Gerhard (Gerry) Maré (bio)

The publication of this special issue was made possible by the commitment, care, stirring and support of several friends, colleagues and institutions.

It all began with Norman Duncan. In his unfailingly enabling way, and in his capacity at the time as Head of the School of Human and Community Development at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), Norman Duncan applied to host Zimitri Erasmus as a Carnegie Resident Equity Scholar. Leading an institutional conversation on a subject of national concern is a key requirement of this Scholarship. The colloquium, ‘Revisiting Apartheid Race Categories’, from which this special issue emerged, became this conversation.

The University of Cape Town (UCT) extended Zimitri’s sabbatical leave so that she might enjoy the privilege of this scholarship. For this, she is indebted to Professors Danie Visser, Crain Soudien and David Cooper for their generosity.

In addition to funding from UCT, the School of Human and Community Development, the Transformation Office and the Faculty of Humanities at the University of the Witwatersrand, and the Centre for Critical Research on Race and Identity at the University of kwaZulu Natal funded and co-hosted this event. We are most grateful for this institutional support. In this regard, special thanks are due to Professor Tawana Kupe, Nazeema Mohamed and Hugo Canham.

The logistics behind such an event are no small matter. We are thankful to Nomonde Gogo, Hugo Canham, Chris Kriel, Rumbi Goredema, Niall McNulty and Kira Erwin for their meticulous attention to detail, and their warm reception of all participants.

We extend our gratitude to all who participated in the colloquium, to the anonymous reviewers and especially to contributors for their patient dedication to this publication.

With best wishes [End Page 178]
