Abstract

The common perception in the Islamic tradition is that there is no distinction between the soul and spirit. This article, however, argues otherwise on the basis of numerous quotations from the Hadith literature. The soul and spirit are described as having inclinations for material and immaterial matters, respectively. It is for this reason that the spirit seeks to guide the soul toward virtue and away from vice.
