Guidelines for Submission

Manuscripts should follow the format outlined in the MLA Style Manual. All text must be double-spaced in a clear, easy-to-read 12-point typeface on 8 1/2- x 11-inch white paper. Text should be left justified with one-inch margins. Manuscripts are not to exceed thirty (30) pages of typewritten, double-spaced pages, including endnotes and Works Cited pages. Two (2) print copies and one (1) copy on a computer disk in Microsoft Word format, should be submitted along with a cover page with the title, author's name, and address (including email address) for correspondence and proofs. L&U will acknowledge receipt of your manuscript, usually by email. Manuscripts are sent anonymously for review. The review process generally takes about two to three months. If a manuscript is not accepted for publication, it will be returned only if it is accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Manuscripts should be original and not previously published.

If the manuscript is accepted for publication, the author(s) must submit (1) a paper copy of the final manuscript, (2) a version on disk in Microsoft Word format, (3) a 100-word or less abstract, and (4) a brief biographical note. Please identify the digital version by author's last name, then file name. Example: Jones Peter Pan

Permissions for Copyrighted Materials. The author must secure any necessary permissions for copyrighted material for print and electronic reproduction. Permission fees are the responsibility of the author.

As of the spring of 2005, we will also be adding an annual poetry feature. The centerpiece will be a long essay on the year's work in poetry published for children in North America in 2004. It will be modeled on the Signal poetry award essays which appeared from 1979-2001 in the British journal Signal (which ceased publication in August 2003). The first The Lion and the Unicorn award will be given at Simmons College in Boston in the summer of 2005. The first judges are Richard Flynn, professor, Georgia Southern University; Kelly Hager, assistant professor, Simmons College; and Joseph Thomas, assistant professor, California State University at Northridge.
