Abstract

In this lengthy interview conducted by Michael Martin and David Wall on May 20, 2011, historian Khalil Muhammad provides some broad social and historical contextualization for the production of Nothing But a Man. Beyond this, he offers a close analysis of the visual text that, while sometimes standing in counterpoint to the filmmakers' own claims for the film, acknowledges its timely and critical contribution to both black cinema and the politics of civil rights.
