Abstract

In an earlier publication, the author of this contribution expressed the view that the kingdoms of the western highlands of Cameroon may have emerged as a response to the development of the triangular Atlantic trade, at the periphery of the modern world system. By contrast, more recent discussions suggest that this scheme may be walking on its head and should be put back on its feet. Far from being a peripheral and late development, the civilization of the western highlands of Cameroon may have been an ancient center of development, presumably connected to the Euroasiatic and African world system through the Lake Chad area and the upper Nile Valley.
