This article will discuss how the sacred tree was regarded as a manifestation of the Goddess in pre-Hispanic Mexico and how Mary's association with trees in Christian religion enabled the indigenous people to integrate this new "goddess" into their world vision. It will also explore why Christian crosses worshipped during the feast of the Holy Cross in Mexico are associated to the Virgin Mary and why in some villages Mary is referred to as "the cross."
