NOTES FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR RMMLA/Huntington Award The RMMLA/Huntington Award Committee has selected Thomas H. Schmid of the University of Texas, El Paso, as the winner of the 1997 RMMLA/Huntington Award. Professor Schmid will be working on a manuscript entitled "'Willing Gazers': Female Travel Writers and the Discourse of Romanticism," in which he argues that women travel writers of the Romantic period do not simply and always resist or subvert male aesthetic ideologies, but that they both exploit and are victimized by them. This year's selection committee was chaired by Florence Moorhead-Rosenberg (RMMLA Vice President) and included Stacy Burton (RMMLA President) and Jan Widmayer (Review editor). In conjunction with the Huntington Library, the RMMLA each year offers a $1,800 stipend to support research at the Huntington. All members of the RMMLA are eligible, and we especially encourage younger scholars to apply. The deadline for the 1998 Award is January 1, 1998. Criteria for the selection include value of the project , appropriateness of the research to material available at the Huntington, promise and experience of the researcher, and proposed use or distribution of the results. To apply, send five copies of a vita indicating prior research and publication plus a description of the project and any work completed on it, along with a letter indicating what Huntington materials would be used, the approximate dates of residence, and a statement agreeing that all funds received will be used for the purpose of research and that, should the candidate be unable to use the funds, the RMMLA would be notified immediately. Membership Renewals Membership in the RMMLA is by calendar year. We make several attempts to contact members to notify them when their membership is about to expire, but our addresses are sometime out of date. If a colleague is not receiving mailings—the Review, the Call for Papers, or registration materials—the colleague should check with the RMMLA to determine membership and address status. The year through which your membership has been paid is indicated on the mailing label after your name. —Charles G. Davis ...
