NOTES FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR RMMLA Election Barbara Lafford of Arizona State University has been elected as VicePresident of the RMMLA. Professor Lafford served as the local arrangements host for the 1991 conference in Tempe. She will serve a three year term as Vice-President, President, and Past-President. Carol Scates, Head of the Department of English and Philosophy at New Mexico Highlands University, has been elected to a three-year term as delegate. Leaving the Executive Board are Sherry Burgus Little of San Diego State University and Wolff Von Schmidt of the University of Utah. Both have been active members of the Board, and their presence will be missed. Departmental Memberships The Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association now offers departmental memberships for an annual fee of $45. A departmental membership will be issued in the name of one department, though the costs could be shared by more than one; all mailings will be sent to the address specified by the unit ordering the membership. Departmental memberships provide a means for a department to encourage faculty participation in the professional activities available through the RMMLA. The Call for Papers and the Review will be sent to departments. Through such a membership, departments may obtain detailed information about submitting to the Review, presenting papers at the conference, proposing special sessions for the conference, and applying for the $1,800 RMMLA-Huntington Research Award and for the $1,000 RMMLA-Mellen Book Award. Individual department members who do choose to participate in RMMLA activities must become members themselves. Departmental memberships or more information may be obtained by writing to Charles G. Davis, Executive Director, RMMLA, L-206, Boise State University, Boise, ID 83725. Change ofAddress Please report any change of address to the RMMLA office, c/o Charles G. Davis, Executive Director, L-206, Boise State University, Boise, ID 83725. The RMMLA mails bulk mail to save money. Bulk mail is neither forwarded nor returned, so we do not know whether our mail is reaching you. In October, the RMMLA Board voted to charge members for remailing material because the actual cost of remailing an issue of the Review is about $7.00. Notice Humor and Transgression in Peacock, Shelley, and Byron: A Cold Carnival by Thomas H. Schmid was published by Mellen Press in 1992. Schmid's manuscript for the book won the RMMLA-Mellen Press Award in 1991. RMMLA-Huntington Award An RMMLA committee chaired by Arthur Coffin, a member of the Executive Board, has selected Alexander Pettit of North Texas State University as the recipient of the 1993 RMMLA-Huntington Award. His proposal is entitled "A Various Opposition: History and Rhetoric in the War on Walpole." Kari B. McBride, Modern Languages, University of Arizona, Eugene Cunnar, English, New Mexico State University, and Robert C. Ritchie, Director of Research at the Huntington, also served on the committee. The stipend for the RMMLA-Huntington Award is $1,800 to support research at the Huntington Library. Any RMMLA member may apply for the 1994 award by submitting materials to the Executive Director by January 1, 1994. To apply, send five copies of a vita indicating prior research and publication plus a description of the project and any work completed on it, along with a letter indicating what materials would be used at the Huntington, the approximate dates of residence, and a statement agreeing that all funds will be used for the purpose of research and that should the candidate be unable to use the funds, the RMMLA would be notified immediately.
