JOSEPH N. RIDDEL I93I-I99I As this issue of the Arizona Quarter goes to press, the Editors are saddened by the news of the death ofJoe Riddel. A member of the Editorial Advisory Board, a contributor, and a friend of the journal, he will be missed by all those who have been touched by his generosity of spirit. His own work, of course, was a pioneering contribution to the theorizing of American literature, and his teaching and writing were instrumental in bringing contemporary European critical theory together with American critical practice. Joe Riddel was born in West Virginia and died in Los Angeles. He received his Ph.D. from the University ofWisconsin and taught at Duke, SUNY Buffalo, and UCLA. The Winter 1 992 issue of Arizona Quarterly will be a special number dedicated to his memory and to his continuing influence on students of American literature and theory. ...
