THE CONTRIBUTORS JENNiFR Jordan baker recently received her Ph.D. in English at the University of Pennsylvania. She is currently a visiting assistant professor in the Department of English at Vassar College. maría c. Sánchez is an assistant professor in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at San Diego State University, where she teaches nineteenth- and twentieth-century American literature . She has co-edited a collection of essays entitled Passing: Identity and Interpretation in Sexuality, Race, and Religion, which will be published in the spring of 2001 . Susan kalter is an assistant professor of American Literature at Illinois State University. She completed her dissertation on U.S. and Native American responses to the ideology of savagism in 1999. Her current area of concentration is the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with a particular interest in issues of contact between oral and literary cultures. Gordon tapper is an assistant professor of English at Centre College , where he teaches twentieth-century American poetry, AfficanAmerican Literature, and an interdisciplinary course in Western Humanities. Currently he is working on a book entitled "The Native Point of View: American Modernism and the Ethnographic Idea of Culture." Lesley brill teaches at Wayne State University in Detroit.
