transubstantiation and lav'nder nights

Anne Waters

Transubstantiation

i smell that bread from the hornos
baked soft, warm
in my mouth, bread, waarm bread, atop wet tongue
i am eating the bread of many mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, nieces,
cousins, daughters, grandaughters
hands making bread of life, love, warm hornos
nearby women's hands and arms and bodies carry the bread
within two hands, kneading, pushing, pulling, wrapping, sustaining
soft dough. i am smelling the bread of life sharing.
life of bread from a mountain in the desert
surrounding
women's soft laughter as each breath nourishes
being
as we are
what we eat.

Lav'nder Nights

I miss my ndn sisters down at the bar
where the low riders usta drive on central
albuqueeeeerque
with the sandias always waarm brown 'nd lav'ndr sof
an the fairground's full of all thos
bros struttn black ndn hats
yolanda if I come for a visit would I hear
your voice [End Page 101]
in cricketts bar that usta be on 4th but was moved
to central causa the cops
where we danced with our ndn chicana black latino asian
sstrs n bros to the musics of yes
we are all here in this together t'night
an' effie would you stay affer an talk at the bar
or in a booth with beer all 'roun like we used to
when you'd tell us to get an edu caaa shun
an you'd be telling jokes an stories jus like you used to
when you weren't called to the pow wow club
or even when you were 'nd some of us'd follow
an close th' place down the way it was back then?
