Abstract

My own findings make it impossible to argue with the observation that participatory development schemes really only benefit those who are already better off, and I have since made a point of sharing it in my teaching on international development at University of California, Berkeley. When my students, brimming with good intentions, ask, what is to be done, I tell them the only thing that I now know for certain: ideals may take you around the world, but if you really want to make a difference, you have to be committed to one place and you have to be in for the long haul.
