APPALACHIA remembers A FRIEND Carl Dewey Perkins October 25, 1912-August 3, 1984 There was a man. He lived in the hills of Eastern Kentucky. He walked and talked, laughed and cried, worked and played, and prayed as he climbed the mountains and trudged through the valleys with the people that lived among the hills he loved. He longed and searched for a better way of life for his beloved mountain folk. He served them as well as people all across our land who struggle against poverty, ignorance, and disease. He will be remembered as long as the poor need a champion, as long as there are children to teach, as long as hazards to health and safety of the worker exist, and as long as America sings of her heritage which God has provided in leaders such as Congressman Carl D. Perkins. Today, August 3, 1985, the anniversary of his passing, the people of Knott County and all of Eastern Kentucky, again salute their native son for his dedication to their cause.
