FEATURED ARTIST—SARAH HASTY WILLIAMS Sarah Hasty Williams Ashley Lawrence Sarah Hasty Williams describes herself as "a painter of living things" who draws her inspiration from the multi-dimensional levels of nature, wildlife and humanity. Working with watercolor and mixed media, Williams sets out to explore the connections she finds between these muses, using a mix of representational and impressionistic techniques. Her images featured here in Appalachian Heritage evoke a feeling of the subtle drama of nature, communicating with her audience some of the many ways in which both art and nature can surprise us. Williams got her start as an artist very early, when a schoolteacher took notice of her talents and put her to work painting murals in the school, latermakinga suggestion toherparentstoenrollherinprivateart lessons. Although born in North Carolina, Williams spent many of her formative years in East Tennessee. She worked briefly for the Tremont Environmental Center in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. That experience evoked a deep respect for the pioneers of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, which evidences itself in her art work. Currently she is an active wildlife artist, a co-owner of the Artist's Choice FramingGallery, Inc. and apaintingdemonstratorforthefamous Windsor Newton company. Her works (both literary and artistic) have been published for numerous fundraising events in support of conservation and preservation causes. She has developed a workshop for the National Wildlife Federation Family Summits, done custom work for the Discovery Center Nature Museum in Roanoke, Virginia, as a part of an interactive on-going exhibit, designed cover work for musical albums and an anthology (in which she was also published), as well as the book cover for this issue's featured author Jeff Mann's LovingMountains , LovingMen. Williams has also been featured in many art galleries. Presently, Williams is working on a multi-media fine art exhibit about women of strength in Appalachia, entitled "She Walks the Serpentine Trail."
