Wolfe died on February 9, 2006, of complications from diabetes. He was 62. Author George Saunders judged the competition which was coordinated by the Iowa Writers Workshop. The magazine also highlighted an excerpt of Berry's afterword to the book Missing Mountains, in which Berry discussed the pervasive human destruction of Kentucky's natural environment.
