58The Southeastern Geographer Gibson Fund for Studies in Agricultural Geography At the annual business meeting of the Southeastern Division, on November 23, 1965, Dr. J. Sullivan Gibson presented a deed for 94.75 acres of land on New Hope Township, Chatham County, North Carolina, which he and Mrs. Gibson executed on that date and by which he proposed to convey to the Association of American Geographers, Inc., the said land, the proceeds from which are to be used by the Association of American Geographers for the purpose of establishing a research fund in agricultural geography to be administered jointly by a committee of the Association of American Geographers and a committee from the Southeastern Division of the Association of American Geographers. It is hoped that some investment earnings will be available in 1968 for making the first grant from this fund. The following guidelines have been established for the administration of the Gibson Fund. 1.Grants will be made primarily for support of research activity of mature scholars (not graduate students) in the field of agricultural geography with priority emphasis on the South. However, other worthy proposals in the general field of agricultural geography may be considered if these relate to some part of the United States. 2.Review process for proposals. a) Proposals are to be sent to the Executive Secretary of the AAG. b) A copy of the proposal will be sent simultaneously to the Research Grants Committee chairman and to the S. E. Division chairman. c) The Executive Secretary will await response from the Southeastern Division before taking action upon the recommendation of the Research Grants Committee unless circumstances for prompt action dictate otherwise. 3.The Gibson Fund will not be permitted to go below the original principle of $8,500 unless a very promising and urgent need exists in which case a relatively small grant might be permitted if the Fund account was above $7,800 but below $8,500. Such a withdrawal would be made only if extenuating circumstances warranted. 4.The grants to any one person are not to be large in amount—generally not to exceed the earnings in any one year or approximately $500, whichever is greater. 5.Contribution to the Gibson Fund may be made at any time by other donors. 6.Research proposals may be submitted at any time. ...
