Hand -the great authority on American and international folk belief- was wont to define a folklorist as "a scholar in search of a system". The present work introduces us to the rigorously thought-out and meticulously elaborated classification system created by Diego Catalán and his team to make available to future scholarship the myriad research materials pertaining to the Pan-Hispanic Romancero brought together, during an entire century of scholarly effort, by Ramón Menéndez Pidal and Maria Goyri de Menéndez Pidal, and later by Diego Catalán, his co-workers, and by many of us who have had the uniquely rewarding privilege of working at the Archivo Menéndez Pidal. From his earliest research efforts and his very first publications, Diego enthusiastically shouldered this daunting responsibility, with brilliant, consistently innovative, pathbreaking results, to the incalculable benefit of international Hispanism. In the "Presentación" (v-xv) to these volumes, Diego Catalán describes his sustained and nothing less than heroic efforts to garner official support for research on and publication of Menéndez Pidal's gigantic Nachlass and for the institutionalization of an Archivo Pan-Hispánico del Romancero, as a crucial component of the Centro de Estudios Hispánicos Menéndez Pidal. These two volumes, a first step toward a complete index ofthe entire Menéndez Pidal ballad collection, constitute an exhaustive computerized catalogue of research materials pertaining to "romances de referente histórico-nacional" at the Archivo Menéndez Pidal and embody the following components: a "Guía de consulta" (xvii-xxxii); an "Apéndice ilustrativo" (xxxiii-xliv); a catalogue oiensaladas (1-11); the catalogue ofromances (13-1023); an appendix of recently discovered additions (1025-1033); and an exhaustive repertoire of indices for títulos (+ clave numerica); músicas; lugares y îecitadores; colectores; La corónica 34.2 (Spring, 2006): 307-309 308ReviewsLa colònica 34.2, 2006 bibliotecas; mimetico de /diegos sueltos (+ clave alfabética); manuscritos; bibliográfico; and abrevie/lutos (1035-1565). The catalogue of Ensaladas (and its index) could, in and of itself, be a startingpoint for further efforts to fill, at least partially, the yawning gap between our knowledge of earlv...
