Through rhetoric that depended upon universalizing specific and limited definitions of certain principles and denying the validity of others, Wilson defined what in Burkean terms is a transcendent order. In Wilson's rhetoric, particulars were subsumed in universals, differences were encompassed within similarities, and exclusions were surrounded and thus masked by apparent inclusions.
