Abstract

An analysis of popular beliefs and attitudes regarding pensions, pension reforms, and the future of retirement savings in China reveals that the strong belief in state-funded pensions held by many Chinese at or near the retirement age, especially given the large pension debt already acquired by the Chinese government, will exacerbate the current "guns vs. butter" debate in China and may even threaten social stability.
