Abstract

In the early 1970's Ignacio Ellacuría presented lectures on Ignatius of Loyola's Spiritual Exercises presenting them as a means of discerning a way forward for the Catholic Church in Latin America at that time. His lectures reflect a complex interpenetration of philosophical framework and the novel spirituality articulated by Ignatius of Loyola. He also argued that they provided a methodology that could appropriate the legitimate contributions of the human and social sciences, without compromising the disruptive "more" that comes from the transcendent dimension of Christian faith. To the extent that they provide an approach to discernment that considers communal and institutional decisions (in addition to individual ones) these lectures continue to be relevant today.
