Abstract

This essay works off the supposition that all interpretations of the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius Loyola entail a theological vision that shapes the construal. If the Exercises are to be presented meaningfully to people who actively and critically participate in Western developed societies, the theological presuppositions governing their interpretation must be attuned to postmodern culture. What are the characteristics of such a theology? This essay describes a "searching" and "narrative" theology, and then shows how this is consistent with the logic and structure of the Spiritual Exercises.
