While the miracle of Sarah'sresurrection is underway,leaf blowers have already begundriving their noxious fumesunder my doorsills, aroundthe frames of windows.Sarah is strong and wellas she has never been in life.In a hospital room, platefulsof nourishing food waitfor her: heaps of scrambledeggs, delicate croissants, tea.And she moves, her crabbed handsand feet entirely erased.In their place, fingers danceand toes unfurl. She rises, walkswhile the leaf blowers pull meaway from my lastmoments with the risen Sarahinto their world of doingand getting done. Myra Sklarew is Professor Emerita in the Department of Literature at American University. She is the author of three chapbooks and six collections of poetry including Lithuania: New & Selected Poems; a collection of short fiction, Like a Field Riddled by Ants; and essays, Over the Rooftops of Time. Forthcoming works include Harmless (poetry) and Holocaust and the Construction of Memory. A former president of Yaddo Artist Community, she has won the National Book Council Award in Poetry and PEN Syndicated Fiction Award.
