1951). At the time of his death he was on the staff of the Manter Hall School. Although Professor Bruerton was best known as a Hispanist, he had specialized earlier in French literature; at Harvard he majored in French and wrote his doctoral dissertation on the history of the "comédievaudeville ." It was not, apparently, until after his return to the United States and to teaching that he became interested to any extent in Spanish literature, and having done so it was natural that he should turn to the Spanish theatre, for the theatre was a lifelong passion of his. (Even while an undergraduate he was co-author of a comedy entitled Lost . . . a Chaperon, published in Boston in 1912.) Quite possibly it was an article of Professor Morley's—"Notas sobre cronología lopesca" (Revista de Filología Española, XIX, 1932, pp. 15 1-157)—that awakened Professor Bruerton's interest in Lope de Vega; at any rate it was Lope who now attracted him and this interest led afterwards to collaboration with Professor Morley , first in their article, "How Many Comedias Did Lope de Vega Write?" (Hispania, XIX, 1936, pp. 217-234) and later in their epoch-making book, The Chronology of Lope de Vega's "Comedias" (New York-London, 1940). Meanwhile Professor Bruerton had begun to publish the results of his own investigations on Lope, starting with the note, "The Chronology of Some Plays by Lope de Vega" (Hispanic Review, III, 1935, pp. 247249 ). He continued to work on Lope throughout the following years and contributed several more articles on him, the most recent one being "Las ferias de Madrid de Lope de Vega" (Bulletin Hispanique, LVII, 1955, pp. 56-69). But he did not stop here; rather, having been so successful in the study of Lope's versification and chronology, he soon turned to other dramatists of the period and to other aspects of their work and ultimately covered in his investigations a wide range of the siglo de oro drama. Thus his publications of the last dozen years or more include articles on Guillen de Castro, Tirso, Vélez de Guevara, Alarcón and others, as well as numerous reviews of studies and editions in this field. His last piece of research, completed only four days before his death and soon to appear in the Nueva Revista de Filología Hispánica, dealt with "Spanish Dramatic Versification, 1587-1610." Professor Bruerton will be remembered by all who knew him for his graciousness and thoughtfulness for others, his intelligence and insight, his dependability and integrity , and not least of all, his wit and humor. His passing is a severe loss to Hispanic scholarship, to his colleagues and students , and to his friends. W. L. (For information concerning the locale see the official program of the MLA convention .) The topic will be: "The Spanish Comedia—Methods of Criticism." Those attending should provide themselves with a text of Rojas Zorrilla, Del rey abajo ninguno. This play will be discussed from different points of view by Louise Wester, Carlos Ortigoza, and Ramon Rozzell. A general conference on ways of reading and evaluating the work will follow. All who are interested are cordially invited to attend the annual luncheon at the Tally-Ho Restaurant, 810 17th Street, N.W. at 12:30 P.M. on the 27th. The cost of the meal will be $1.75, including tax and tip. If we can guarantee at least 22 guests the Tally-Ho will furnish, free of extra charge, a private dining room.
