Perhaps to Be

Thadious M. Davis

In the afternoon the sun
starts to sink
            over the sea
            over the shore
            over the fort.
And the long haul into evening
begins to pull
with the light
            with the shadows
            with the clouds.
It is Cuba.
I am not Cubana.
It is Havana.
I am not Habana.
But looking at the Bay
            at the afternoon sun
            at the angle of light
            at the Malecón
I see now the possibility
of both.

Thadious M. Davis is G. C. Vanderbilt Professor of English at Vanderbilt University. Her new book is Games of Property: Law, Race, Gender and Faulkner's "Go Down Moses".
