Abstract

This investigation is part of a comprehensive book project on the representation of motherhood in literature, painting, fairy tales, film and television, theater, and advertising. Edited by Renate Möhrmann, it will be published in the spring of 1996 by Metzler Verlag under the title Verklärt—Verkitscht—Vergessen: Die Mutter als ästhetische Figur. Since this project will be the first examination in German of the aesthetic representation of motherhood throughout various disciplines—and from the perspective of the mother rather than that of the daughter—the focus is less on the critical interpretations of individual works than on the treatment of motherhood within specific genres.
