Editor's Note The Council of Editors of Learned Journals (CELJ) presents yearly awards for outstanding journalistic efforts. Among the awards, conferred at the annual MLA convention , is the naming of a DISTINGUISHED RETTRING EDITOR . In each category, the CELJ names a winner and a runner-up. Honoring his twenty-six years of service, the editorial board of the Bulletin of the Comediantes nominated James A. Parr for the retiring editor award. The CELJ judges named him runner-up for the award, and Jim was recognized at the awards ceremony in Chicago in December 1999 (and, shortly thereafter, at the Comediantes banquet). We congratulate Jim Parr for his extraordinary efforts on behalf ofthejournal and for having achieved this honor. Volume 52, Number 1, of the Bulletin of the Comediantes offers a range of essays and reviews, which we hope will engage and enlighten our readers.
