Abstract

In answering written questions from an open text, prelingually deaf students often try to match a specific word or phrase in a question with a particular word or phrase in the text. Upon locating a sentence with the particular word or phrase, the whole is automatically copied as the answer, without regard for the concept involved. This tendency is sufficiently common in deaf students to require a technique for combating it.

The strategy proposed, involves the use of overhead materials which include a sample story followed by overlay question strips. The questions are written in synonymical vocabulary rather than in the identical words of the text. Students may thus practice matching the "concept-asked-for" with the correct "concept-answer" without being influenced by like-words. Preparation of materials and class procedures are also described.
