Previous research has repeatedly demonstrated the importance of a student's perceived locus of control to various aspects of instruction. Studies with hearing-impaired students have demonstrated the need for and have called for a psychometrically sound instrument especially designed for hearing-impaired persons. The Locus of Control Inventory for the Deaf (LCID), specifically developed for this purpose, is presented. Scale development procedures, scoring information, and empirical evidence in support of the reliability and construct validity of the LCID are also reported. The findings demonstrate the soundness of the LCID for hearing-impaired persons as compared with two other commonly used scales originally developed for normally hearing persons.
