260 Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies The chapter which clearly shows rhe sustained effects of industrial pollutants in a community and the dignity and strength with which community leaders use their own disease as a rally point for change and social activism is "Living Is for Everyone." This chapter examines Jimmy Teyechea's tremendous struggles ro survive "myeloma " or blood cancer and his founding of LIFE (living is for everyone) to address how the "disease clusters" in his neighboihood and orhers are linked to the dumping of industrial pollutants and pesticide soil and water contamination. His organization was met with resistance and clearly shows how the state and federal public health agencies are unwilling to challenge die hegemony of boidei industries, regardless of the preponderance of evidence of neighborhoods serving as toxic dump sites. The questions this chapter poses are: how many people have to die from the toxic waste ravages of cancer and lupus before there is change; and mote specifically, do the lives of Mexicans and Mexican Americans mattet less in the global economy? In sum: Lives on the Line adds to the recent boom of US/Mexico border writings and will be useful in a variety of academic and non-academic settings. Lives provides a much better researched and well balanced narrative than Annerino'i Dead in their Tracks, for example, a sensationalist and self-absorbed account of border crossings in rhe Arizona/Mexico desert. Its limitations, however, is that the testimonies of die border survivors whose eloquence and insight sometimes get lost in all the numbers, statistics and sociological-like and policy analysis. As an investigative journalist, especially as background for legal cases this minute detail is crucial. However for a study of the peoples whose lives are inteisected by the border with police and INS state enforced violence on both sides, and the extreme and multi-faceted oppression of the maquiladora boom, the need to listen to these autoethnographic voices is paramount.
