NIME-03, Montreal, Canada

The 2003 International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME-03) will be held 22-24 May 2003 at McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, hosted by the Faculty of Music of McGill University.

NIME-03 will be the third conference on new musical interface design, and follows the initial NIME workshop held in Seattle, Washington, USA, and the NIME-02 International Conference, held at the MediaLab Europe, in Dublin, Ireland, in May 2002 (see "News" in this issue). The 2003 conference will consist of a three-day event where research papers, demonstrations, and performances will be presented that correspond to the state of the art concerning new interfaces for musical expression. NIME-03 has invited Michel Waisvisz, Claude Cadoz, and Joe Paradiso as guest speakers. More information about the conference can be found on the NIME Web site (www.nime.org). MAXIS 2003, Sheffield, UK

The 2003 Music Alternative X-disciplinary Approaches in Sound (MAXIS) festival and symposium of sound and experimental music will be held 11-13 April 2003 in Sheffield, UK, under the general title "Alternative Approaches." Its focus will be on aesthetic and technological issues pertinent to sound. The festival will include sound art installations, new music and live performance, lectures, and workshops. Topics addressed at the symposium will be drawn from new tools and techniques, alternative products, interaction and sensitive systems, "post-digital" music, improvisation, soundscapes and acoustic ecology, educational projects and teaching resources, listening exercises, multi-sensory environments, ambisonics and surround sound, environment, sound and architecture, and acoustics. This was held 12–14 April 2002 and focused on "Innovative, Alternative, and Cross-Disciplinary Approaches in Sound." Sessions were hosted by Kim Cascone on post-digital music, Scott Hawkins on innovations in sound and music, and Kia Ng on interdisciplinary approaches in sound and music.

School of Sound, London, April 2003

The Fifth School of Sound symposium will be held at the South Bank Centre's Purcell Room, London, UK, 23-26 April 2003. Since its inception in 1998, the School of Sound has raised the profile of sound in audiovisual media through its unique program that integrates practice with theory, and art with entertainment.
