In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

EDITORS' FENCE 1. "Essays on Mariiis": In one sense, 27:1 and 2 are special issues. We have, however, decided to entitle them "Essays on Marius," since both contain reviews of books and briefer notices on a variety of 1880-1920 figures in addition to Pater. ELT continues to be one source where scholars in the field may turn to find not just essays, but reviews, special collections and foreign reports, and bibliographies. This is the first time we have offered consecutive one-author issues, and readers' comments are welcomed. The charicatures of Pater are by John C. Ellis, Professor Emeritus (A.S.U.). 2. MLA 1983: The New York MLA is always well attended, and as expected a number of long-time friends of ELT were present. Even though no Board member gave a paper (a rarity to be sure), Bob Langenfeld had the opportunity to chat with Karl Beckson, Wendell Harris, Fred McDowell, Bob Schweik, and Ray Stevens. These visits, although always too brief, certainly prove helpful and most welcome. Perhaps next year's MLA in Washington will see even more of ELT's friends in attendance. 3. Michael Case: Perhaps you have noticed an additional name under the title Editors. Mike Case, who has worked with ELT in various capacities since 1976, is one of Hal Gerber's proteges. Three of Hal's students now edit and publish the journal he founded 27 years ago. 4. JKJ and "Lee": The Jerome K. Jerome and "Vernon Lee" secondary bibliographies (26:2 and 26:4) have stirred interest in far away places. Indeed, Dr. Markgraf, who assiduously compiled both, received an inquiry from one unlikely place—Chile. It seems, too, that several librarians in the U.S. are discovering that the JKJ and "Lee" bibliographies are disappearing from their shelves: permanently. Admittedly this is a strange way to gauge scholarly interest. More commonplace evidence for a renewed interest in such authors, however, is apparent in the reprints by Penguin and others. ELT welcomes essays on JKJ and "Lee," and the bibliographies should prove helpful in reviving consideration of these authors. 5. Special Collections Report: This feature has received very favorable reactions here and abroad. Librarians and interested parties who know of even small collections of turn-of-the-century British writers, particularly collections many scholars may be unfamiliar with, are encouraged to contact the Editors of ELT. 6. Subscriptions: The number of subscribers to ELT is gradually but surely edging upward. Please remind your friends and colleagues to subscribe. Put simply, the more subscribers we have, the greater our resources to expand the content and further improve the format of the journal. 7. New Masthead: Special thanks go to Gillian Conte, of Conte & Foster Design Studio, who designed and composed the masthead and inside back cover. For the typesetting ELT is grateful to Sam Mongeau, Linda Vespa, and Linda Archer of Oryx Press. 8. Forthcoming: Among other features, volume 27:3 will present "The Sociology of Bennett's Clayhanger (Andrew Lincoln, university of London) and Jack Wayne Weaver's translation from Italian of Raffaella Uslenghi's "Una Prospettiva di Unita Nell'Arte di George Moore" (A Perspective of Unity in George Moore's Writings). Numbers 3 and 4 will include reviews of Marlene Springer's Hardy's Use of Allusion (Kristin Brady), Walter Klinefelter's Origins of Sherlock Holmes (Edward S. Lauterbach), Ann Clark More's Mrs. Oscar Wilde: A Woman of Some Importance (Bruce Bashford), Cedric Watt's R. B. Cunningham Graham (John Walker), Brocard Sewell's In the Dorian Mode: A Life of John Gray (G. A. Cevasco), Claude J. Summer's E. M. Forster (Judith Scherer Herz), and Eric Salmon's Granville Barker: A Secret Life (J. P. Wearing). ANNOUNCEMENTS 1. The Pater Newsletter: We encourage our readers to subscribe to The Pater Newsletter. The price annually for two issues, autumn and spring, is $3.00 or £1.50. Subscribers are entitled to be members of the Pater Society of the U.S. and the U.K. without further charge.
