THE EDITOR'S FENCE 1. A Happy Silver Anniversary to English Literature in Transition. The joy that might be expected on such an occasion is seriously tempered by the death of the founder and editor last spring. Hal, characteristically, had not planned a celebration. Had we suggested such an occasion, he would have leaned back in his swivel chair, hands folded over his stomach, and smiled sympathetically. Although visibly pleased at the suggestion, he would explain that editing ELT was only a job and, in any case, at his age he had no time for such frippery. Hal did see the 25th anniversary, however, as a turning point in his career. He talked of simply ceasing publication after volume 25, a suggestion greeted with vociferous protests. Perhaps he would turn the journal into an annual volume. In recent years he spoke of turning over the editorship of ELT to an outstanding and favorite student, David B. Eakin. David has been closely connected with a number of Hal's projects, particularly George Moore on Parnassus, the forthcoming edition of selected letters. They also collaborated on "In Minor Keys"¡ George Moore's Uncollected Stories. More important David worked on all phases of ELT from 1975 through 1979. He knows the ELT period, has high standards of scholarship, and will make an excellent editor. With your continued support ELT will continue to be the important and useful journal it was under Hal's editorship. Sitting in Hal's chair, literally and figuratively, has not been easy. Every time a problem arises I find myself wondering how Hal would have dealt with the problem. Because of my inexperience in the period I have had to rely heavily on members of the editorial board. "Thank you" seems so inadequate for all of your assistance and encouragement over the last ten months. My gratitude is heartfelt and I hope that you will feel that there has been no serious decline in the quality of the journal. 2. Among the pleasures of editing a journal is receiving the morning mail. Not a week goes by without some surprise, A few weeks ago a letter arrived for Hal as editor of ELT from the Boy Scouts of America. It seems that the BSA is attempting to identify alumni. Enclosed were camera ready proofs for an advertisement they wished us to run. That the advertisement does not appear in this issue may be attributed to my eighteenth-century sense of decorum. The letter has made me thoughtful. Did my becoming an Eagle Scout prepare me for the editorship of ELT as it did Gerald Ford for the presidency? ANNOUNCEMENTS 1. Carolinas Symposium on British Studies Soliciting Proposals! The ninth Carolinas Symposium on British Studies will be held at Appalachian State University on 9 and 10 October, 1982. The Symposium seeks to promote research, dialogue, and scholarship in an interdisciplinary forum for scholars in the Southeastern United States. The program committee invites proposals for individual papers, panel discussions, and full sessions in all aspects of British Studies. Proposals should be sent by April 15, 1982 to Warren W. Wooden, Department of English, Marshall University, Huntington, West Virginia 25207. 2. Victorian Fiction Research Guides! The Victorian Fiction Group within the Department of English, University of Queensland, is compiling individual author Guides on minor or lesser known writers active during the period from about i860 to about I910. The Group is also indexing fiction in a number of Victorian journals. Series 2 will cost $20.
