In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

4? BIBLIOGRAPHY, NEWS, AND NOTES Compiled and edited by H. E. Gerber, Bernard Quint, Mary Ellen Quint, and Mary Robbins, with abstracts by others, as noted. Important Notice : The annual updating of bibliographical listings in this issue will be the last. We no longer believe that such piecemeal listing serves the original purpose efficiently or well. During the past seventeen years, we have published substantial annotated bibliographies on many authors in ELT. Further, Northern Illinois University Press has published or contracted for the ASB Series many full-length volumes on major authors in the ELT period. It seems more efficient and more useful that in the future we publish only substantial supplements covering a few years of scholarship on individual authors already represented by ELT bibliographies, Hopefully, it will also be possible to produce substantial supplements to or revised and enlarged editions of the volumes in the ASB Series. We also feel that our annual piecemeal updating is now too nearly duplicating the work of Abstracts of English Studies and the MLA Abstract System. These two resources are providing ample coverage of current research on most major authors and many minor ones. Further, since we now have a backlog of some four or five completed bibliographical projects on minor authors and another twelve to fourteen in progress, what seems like an annual "clipping service" has become less useful and too space-consuming. And space, our printing invoices tell us, is now at a premium. Current Listing: In the current (and last) annual updating, we include unabstracted references to all pertinent articles we have published in Volume XVIIi 1-4 (19?4), as well as abstracts of items published elsewhere. In general, we do not include abstracts of reviews of secondary works unless they contain significant comments on primary works. In general, we do not abstract items already abstracted in Dissertation Abstracts, although we list such items. Index of Authors: ' The following li&t is a coded (see explanation at end of list) index of authors (a) on whom we have published bibliographies in depth in ELT or in the ASB Series, (b) on whom projects are in progress for ELT or the ASB Series, and (c) on whom we would like to consider projects for ELT or, in a few cases, for the ASB Series. Names in parentheses after the subject-author are those of compiler-editors or abstracters who have contributed to the ASB Series, ELT bibliographies in depth, annual listings, or who have projects in progress. In the future, as our backlog diminishes, we shall add other authors to the list of those we are prepared to consider for secondary bibliographies. We are, of course, always ready to discuss projects on authors not now listed. [Coded list follows.] kB Only starred items are listed (with abstracts) in the Bibliography, News and Notes section. Explanation of the code numbers follows at the end of the list. Author Compiler. Editor.
