1^8 THE EDITOR'S FENCE 1. ELT Seminar on the Novel and Society (MLA, New York. Dec 1976)t The twentieth consecutive meeting of the Seminar will be held in New York in Dec 1976, with H. Ray Stevens (Western Maryland College, Westminster, Md) as Discussion Leader. The panel of discussants will consist off Alice Patterson on Bennett, Jill Rubinstein on Butler, and H. Ray Stevens on Galsworthy. Papers by members of the panel will not be read in full at the meeting but will be printed in ELT, 19«4· (1976). ELT Seminar on English Fiction (1880-1920) - Critical Approaches (MLA, Chicago, Dec 1977)ι The proposed twenty-first ELT Seminar, pending MLA approval, will be held at the MLA meetings in Chicago in Dec 1977, with H. E. Gerber (Arizona State University) as Discussion Leader. We shall focus on problems raised by various recent critical approaches to such authors as Arnold Bennett, George Moore, George Gissing, Thomas Hardy, and H. G. Wells. Potential authors of papers are urged to propose new critical directions that might be taken. Papers to be considered should be sent to H. E. Gerber well before 1 July 1977, so that panelists' names may appear in the MLA program. ANNOUNCEMENTS 1.
