Midwest Victorian Studies Association - Call for Papers! Papers and discussion group proposals are being solicited for the annual meeting to be held in St. Louis on 20 and 21 April 1979· Papers may be on any aspect of Victorian England and the Empire of interest to a broadly interdisciplinary audience. Papers should be submitted in a form as close as possible to that in which they would be delivered. Persons wishing to propose topics for discussion groups should submit an outline describing the topic and listing the major points which they would wish such a discussion to cover. Forster's birth will be held on 3-5 May 1979. at Concordia University. Papers are invited that address all aspects of Forster's oeuvre, career, and reputation. Nineteenth-Century Fiction Index: This journal has published an index for vols I-30 (1945-1975), compiled by G. B. and Elizabeth J. Tennyson (Berkeley: University of California P, I977). Incorporating Bradford A. Booth's analytical index to vols I-I9 (I965), the updated index is available from the University of California Press for $10.00. 5· Thomas Hardy at Weymouth and Westminster Abbey: In August Thomas Hardy was again the subject of discussion at the Weymouth Summer School. Among participants were Harold Orel and Peter Casagrande (both of University of Kansas), Frank Giordano (University of Houston), and Robert C. Schweik (SUNY-Fredonia). Hardy was also honored at Westminster Abbey on the occasion of" a ceremony celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of his death. Harold Orel was asked to give an oration. Ms. C. Day Lewis read some of Hardy's poems, and the "Mellstock Quire" from Stinsford Parish sang. 215 6. People : Robert C. Schweik (SUNY-Fredonia) has been appointed Distinguished Teaching Professor at SUNY-Fredonia. Professor Schweik is one of five faculty members in the entire SUNY system to receive the award this year. He was cited not only for his scholarly productivity and his lectures at Trier, Weymouth and elsewhere but also for his commitment to his students. At Fredonia Bob Schweik has given record concerts and special lectures on history, music, art and architecture . Thanks to Bob Schweik, Victorian culture is alive at Fredonia. Ian Fletcher (University of Reading) has been appointed to a Personal Chair in English effective 1 Oct 1978. After one year as Distinguished Visiting Professor at Arizona State University, Ian is on his way back to England via visits to California libraries and a summer session stint in Canada.
