Rate Increase for 1979¡ Government reports on the declining rate of increasing inflation (what wonderful "newsspeak") notwithstanding , the economic life of a non-profit journal is still not an 'appy one. ELT has for twenty years held its own remarkably well, despite (or because?) of its being independent and self-supporting. Our loyal subscribers have continued to insist that we not reduce the amount of content and that we not retreat to a less expensive means of printing. So be it. BUT--. The price of quality and quantity is high. We must therefor raise our subscription rates for 1979· U.S. subscriptions will be $5.00 per year, $2.00 for single copies (current and back numbers); foreign subscriptions, including Canada, wil] be $6.00 per year, $2.50 for single copies (current and back numbers). Future MLA Special Sessions: At the Chicago MLA meeting and in the Editor's Fence of the preceding number of ELT, I announced that I would no longer initiate or be responsible for ELT Special Sessions on a regular annual basis. Nor will I use precious space in the fourth number of each volume to pre-print Special Session papers. I will be happy to make announcements concerning such relevant Special Sessions as any individual may wish to propose to MLA at such time that MLA approval has been secured. The deadline for such announcements will be August 1 at the latest. These announcements will be included in the third or fourth number, which are mailed about October I5. 3. Forthcoming in ELTi We have scheduled for publication in two fall numbers articles on Galsworthy, Dowson, and Conrad; letters from Moore to Elgar; an annotated secondary bibliography on R. B. Cunninghame Graham; and diverse other goodies. Awaiting time and space are annotated secondary bibliographies on Pinero and Henry Arthur Jones; articles on Oscar Wilde, Rudyard Kipling, Thomas Hardy, and E. M. Förster; and assorted propaganda on behalf of publishers who serve our profession well. ANNOUNCEMENTS 1. MLA Division News for 1978: With Marjorie Perloff as Chair and H. E. Gerber as Secretary, the MLA Division on Late 19thand Early 20th-century British Literature is planning a program for the 1978 MLA meeting (New York) on the topic Writers as Letter Writers. Panelists and their particular subjects will be announced later. The possibility of an ancillary meeting sponsored by the Division is also under consideration. The current members of the Division Executive Committee are Marjorie Perloff, Chair; H. E. Gerber, Secretary; Marvin Magalaner, former Chair; Albert Guerard; and Stanley Weintraub. ...
