ELT 37:4 1994 the machine, ignores a logic that is implicit in his distinction: Lawrence rarely dramatizes a machine that does not display some version of this imbalance. In his analysis of Lady Chatterley's Lover IngersoU is particularly hard-pressed to sustain his thesis. He is led to assert that Clifford is not "outside the realm of the narrator's sympathy." In pursuit of this most unfortunate revisionism, IngersoU neglects to note how such "sympathy"—as Mark Spilka demonstrated conclusively forty years ago—is presented by Lawrence as a fraudulent sentiment that gradually changes into a legitimate contempt for the magnate in the motorchair .
