Because Boswell allowed Johnson to read most of his Hebridean Journal as it was being written, the form of this biography, unlike the Life, reflects the growth in their relationship. It also constitutes a secondary form of discourse between them, the resulting subtleties of which make it a unique contribution to the history of biography.
