Sir William Herbert in Tudor Politics, 1547-53

Herbert is usually seen as a schemer loyal to none but himself. This paper attempts to penetrate behind the generally recognized "Machiavellian" facade of his character. It reveals what may be considered the most plausible character of the man: ambitious, artful, but not altogether a monster of avarice without any redeeming features.
