The Paradox of Lincoln's Rhetorical Leadership

Abraham Lincoln's greatest moment of leadership was the Emancipation Proclamation. Although the Proclamation is the subject of sharp criticism, it embodies the paradoxes of Lincoln's presidency better than any other text. Proceeding from the assumption that audiences interpret rhetorical leadership variously, I demonstrate that the text's appropriation and extension guaranteed its significance.
