Via a discussion of the paronomasia linking the Latin words for “pathless” and “bird,” this essay discusses Vergil’s allusions to Lucretius in Aeneid 7. The extract leads me to reconsider Lucretius’ passage on the clinamen, misread by Harold Bloom, and to comment on Riffaterre’s explanation of literary influence.
