MISCELLANEOUS REVIEWS 1. Short Fiction of the 1890's Wendell V. Harris. "Fiction in the English 'Experimental' Periodicals of the 1890's," Bulletin of Bibliography, XXV (Jan-Apr I968), 111-18. In this very useful bibTiography, which is more thorough and more systematic than the related materials that appear in E. L. Casford's pamphlet, The Magazines of the Nineties (Eugene: Ore, I929), Holbrook Jackson's The Eighteen Nineties (Lond, 1913), or Katherine L. Mix's A Study in Yellow (Lawrence, Kansas, i960), Harris provides bibliographical data on the more important "little magazines" of the 1890's, the names of editors, and, more importantly , a list of the short fiction that appeared in each. Harris lists the short fiction contents of Albemarle, Anglo-Saxon Review, Butterfly, Dome, Evergreen, Pageant, Quarto, Savoy, Venture, and Yellow Book. He excludes such titles as Century Guild Hobby Horse, although it included two stories by Dowson; Antl-Phlllstlne; Chameleon ; Pagan Review; Page; Parade ; Rose Leaf, which is not in the union lists of serials of the U. S. or England (it might for this reason have been included); etc. Perhaps the third volume of Savage Club Papers (1897) and Spirit Lamp might also have been included . Nevertheless, Harris gives us an excellent guide to the short fiction appearing in the more important periodicals of the period. 59 The Riches of Quinn Harvey Simmonds. John Qulnn: An Exhibition to Mark the Gift of The John Qulnn Memorial Collection. New YorkT New York Public Library, 1968. Reprinted from New York Public Library Bulletin, Nov 1968. John Quinn's activities as a collector over many years and in diverse fields must surely be known to every scholar. As his interests changed over the years he sold or donated portions of what he had collected. The famous Quinn sale of 1923 is recorded in The Library of John Qulnn (NY: The Anderson Galleries, 1923), a work which has become an important bibliographical tool. The New York Public Library exhibition catalogue is much more selective , of course, but it, too, is an important bibliographical document. ELT readers will be especially interested in the notes on page proofs and holographs of works, as well as letters, by such writers as Lionel Johnson, T. W. Rolleston, W. B. Yeats, Douglas Hyde, G. W. Russell (AE), J. M. Synge, Joseph Conrad, Arthur Symons, Lady Gregory and others. Also included in the collection are photographs , rare and signed editions, bills, and other items. Richard Campbell provides a brief "Memorial of John Quinn" and Walter Pach a note on "Mr. Quinn as a Collector." Northern Illinois University H. E. Gerber ...
