Romani law in the Timiş County Giambaş community

Scholarship on Romani law, and in particular the "Gypsy court", has developed in recent years. One recent study has offered a typology grounding the presence of a court system in those Romani groups which speak "New Vlax" dialects of Romani and which have a nomadic or semi-nomadic recent past. The present essay offers new research testing this thesis. The group at issue indeed speaks a dialect of Romani linked to the Romania-oriented dialect groups, but appears to lack a recent history of nomadism. Other aspects of Romani law in the context of the particular Romani group at issue are also discussed.
