Editor's Note

This is the thirty-seventh annual bibliography of the history of technology published by T&C, and the last print edition. We will carry annual publication of the bibliography forward in electronic form, available through our web site, and the cumulative contents back to 1987 will also remain on-line as part of the Research Libraries Information Network's History of Science and Technology database.

There is an inevitable tendency, upon reaching such a bend in the road, to look back—and, in view of the context, to add up a few numbers. The "Current Bibliography in the History of Technology" debuted with the winter 1964 issue of T&C; that first installment ran eight and a half pages, not including the table of contents and introduction, and cited 171 works. Within a year the committee that set the ball rolling had named a bibliographer—Jack Goodwin, of the Smithsonian—and the bibliography had expanded to five hundred citations and acquired an author index. In the following decades it grew steadily in size and scope. A fairly conservative estimate would put the number of books, articles, reviews, and so on cited over the years in the neighborhood of fifty thousand.

Considering its importance to generations of researchers and the sheer volume of material it has encompassed, the most remarkable thing about this ongoing project is how small is the number of people who have carried it out. Perhaps as fitting a way as any to mark this transition is to thank them one more time for their efforts in creating and maintaining one of the crucial supports of this discipline.
