In this September 2008 interview, Doubrovsky sheds light upon the importance of space in his life and œuvre. He examines his complex relationship with Frenchness, Jewishness and his migration to the United States, and addresses the role of his divided sense of self in his literary writings. His motivation for writing his current and last book is to confront the final chapter of his life. His greatest achievement is to have added the word ‘autofiction’ to the French language.
