This article introduces Serge Doubrovsky’s life and work, emphasising his divided and fractured identity. It outlines his literary achievements, as an author and a proponent of the term ‘autofiction’, and argues that his work has been strongly influenced by the period in which he has lived. The studies of this issue of L’Esprit Créateur are introduced and contextualised.
