In this study of African American women at four colleges, the women completed measures of selfconcept, gender identity, and ethnic identity, and were interviewed. Results suggest that women experience race and gender within their selfdefinition differently depending on the racial and gender composition of their school. Colleges and universities need to reexamine their diversity efforts to meet the needs of their students whose experiences are grounded in multiple sociocultural contexts.
