Abstract

Although Nixon provided numerous signals of an impending policy change, most listeners were surprised when he announced that he would visit China. This essay traces the themes of Nixon's discourse over time to explain the evolution of his policy reversal. Moreover, the essay sheds light on the characteristics of Nixon's messages that may have led so many listeners to be surprised.
