Abstract

The Church and the Holocaust in the Art of Louis Malle This essay reconsiders the place of Louis Malle's films in the canon of post- Holocaust film. The essay places Malle's work in the context of contemporary French cinema and of other work by Malle in order to argue that Malle's Aurevoir, les enfants is a probing exploration of the Church's culpability for the Holocaust and of film's o ffice of memory. Showing how Malle moves beyond the realist techniques of his New Wave colleagues, and including a reprise of the theoretical analyses of the problem of Holocaust representation, this essay includes Malle in the tradition of Christian artists, thinkers, and theologians seeking to bear appropriate witness to the Holocaust.
